Counseling and Psychotherapy

Counseling and psychotherapy are based upon a professional relationship between the patient and the therapist. Unlike visiting a medical doctor, psychotherapy requires an active effort on the part of the patient and/or family. Initial meetings with patients are evaluative in nature and personal goals for therapy are explored and defined. The therapist may use interviews, rating scales, and inventories to gain information, but such evaluations are brief. Support is offered without judgment, and the therapist sets the atmosphere to encourage patient growth. Emotions, beliefs, behaviors, and very personal history may need to be explored in therapy sessions. The benefits of therapy are the desired changes and improvements that may be made by the patient.

Psychological Evaluations

More in-depth evaluations completed by Dr. Joseph Roberson are for patients seeking therapy or in therapy with him in the Phoenix area. Such psychological evaluations are clinical in nature, focusing on conditions that may require a medical consult. The evaluations always begin with an interview for the collection of history and records. This type of evaluation requires from two to four hours of testing and may require an equal number of hours for report writing. The evaluation may cover specific concerns, such as anxiety, depression, attention difficulties, hyperactivity, impulsiveness, memory concerns, and other disorders. Such evaluations are often partially covered by insurance.
